Redback RX VS Redback Thick RX
Early in our testing phase it became very evident that some people preferred our thinner RX material and others the thicker. Rather than just choose one, we wanted to give the people the choice. If you are unsure which grip is best for you, here is some of the feedback we received and why these athletes choose this thickness.
Lets first talk about about why thickness matters. For a large percentage of athletes staying up on the rig can be hard. A number of factors come into this however the thicker the grips the thicker the bar will become. For example if you had a grip which is 2.3mm thick, than this will add 2.3mm of thickness to the pull up bar. The fatter the pull up bar, the more your grip strength has to work to keep you on the rig. So the first rule, if you don’t have the best grip strength we would recommend staying with the 2.3mm grips unless you fall into one of the categories below.
The difference between the 2 material’s is only .05mm, this doesn’t sound like allot however it is a noticeable difference when you are up on the rig. The first difference we noticed is that athletes doing larger volume of gymnastics would start using the 2.8mm more often. For example Laura Clifton a Games athlete found the 2.8mm offered extra padding keeping her hands fresh to train longer. The second learn that we took onboard was that heavier athletes with larger hands preferred the thicker grips. Since adding extra thickness to the bar doesn’t impact these athletes as much, the extra padding is always nice and even more so if they are a heavier athlete which means more pressure goes onto the hands.
So, the rule of thumb is if you are a larger athlete either height or just because you are a muscle machine or do high volume like a semi finals level athlete we would recommend going the thicker grip option.
